Is Laminate Flooring Waterproof?

Short answer? Not totally — but it’s better than it used to be.

If you’re shopping for new floors, you’ve probably seen laminate advertised as “waterproof” and wondered what that really means. Let’s keep this simple and clear.

Is It Waterproof or Not?

Traditional laminate flooring is not 100% waterproof.

It’s made with a wood-based core (usually high-density fiberboard), and wood + too much water = swelling. If water sits on it too long or seeps into the seams, it can cause damage.

That said…Modern laminate is much more water-resistant than older versions.

Some brands, like Pergo, now offer laminate lines designed to handle everyday spills and splashes much better than before.

What Happens If Water Sits on Laminate?

If you spill something and wipe it up quickly — you’re usually fine.

But if water:

  • Sits for hours
  • Soaks into the seams
  • Gets underneath the floor

You might see:

  • Swollen edges
  • Bubbling
  • Warping
  • Planks separating

And unlike hardwood, laminate can’t really be sanded and refinished. Damaged boards usually need replacing.

Is Laminate OK for Kitchens?

Kitchens are generally fine, especially if you choose a waterproof-rated laminate and clean up spills quickly. Most everyday splashes won’t be a problem.

What About Bathrooms?

This is where it gets tricky, because bathrooms have:

  • Steam
  • Humidity
  • Splashing around sinks and tubs

Even waterproof laminate can struggle if there’s constant moisture exposure. It can work, but it’s not always the safest long-term choice.

To Summarise

Laminate flooring is:

  • Affordable
  • Durable
  • Scratch-resistant
  • Stylish

But it’s not invincible against water.

If you want something that can handle standing water with zero worries, vinyl plank flooring is typically the safer bet. If you just need protection from normal daily spills, modern laminate can absolutely do the job.
