Straight plank VS Herringbone

Straight plank VS Herringbone

So it's happening, you've got an idea of colour, you were set on the straight plank design & then all of a sudden you come across herringbone flooring & now are at a cross roads asking

Do i go for straight or herringbone?

Well, some of what we'll discuss below might just be the deal breaker for you, so let's get into it!

When comparing straight and herringbone patterns, most people are deciding between two classic flooring layouts for engineered wood, laminate & LVT flooring. Most of this simply comes down to circumstance & personal taste.

We do go into this in abit more detail inside of the installation guide, where we explain the step by step process of laying both straight & herringbone planks, so if you are still unsure after reading this, you can find more information here

Straight Pattern

What it is:

Boards are installed parallel to each other in a continuous line, all running in the same direction.

Pros

  • Simple & clean look – Works with modern, minimal, or traditional interiors.
  • Less expensive – Lower labor cost due to straightforward installation.
  • Faster installation – Easier for contractors.
  • Less material waste
  • Makes spaces look longer – When laid lengthwise.

Cons

  • Less visually interesting
  • Common/standard look
  • Can show uneven walls more easily if not aligned carefully.

Best for: Modern homes, tight budgets, minimalist styles, rental properties.

Herringbone Pattern

What it is:

Boards are laid in a zigzag pattern, where each plank meets another at a 90-degree angle, forming a “V” shape.

Used in historic buildings and luxury interiors—famously seen in places like the Palace of Versailles.

Pros

  • High-end, luxury feel
  • Visually dynamic & elegant
  • Adds texture and movement to a room
  • Can increase perceived property value
  • Great focal point for entryways and living rooms

Cons

  • More expensive – Higher labor cost
  • More material waste
  • Longer installation time
  • Needs more precise planning and skilled installation

Best for: Statement spaces, period homes, luxury renovations.
