My floor has water damage!
So… your current flooring has officially lost the battle against water damage.
Whether it was a slow leak, spills that weren’t wiped up quickly enough, or just life happening — the result is the same: warped boards, swelling, and that slightly uneven “this used to look nice” feeling underfoot.
Now you are asking the big question...
What’s the best replacement?
Well, The Floor is Yours offers 3 different types of flooring
- Engineered Wood
- Laminate
- SPC LVT (Stone Plastic Composite Luxury Vinyl Tile)
Let's recap on the pro's and con's of each, and then summarise what will be the most suitable for you
Engineered Wood – Beautiful, But Be Careful!
Engineered wood looks amazing. It gives you that real wood finish, warmth, and natural grain that’s hard to beat.
Pros:
- Real wood top layer
- Adds value to your home
- Looks premium
Cons:
- Still vulnerable to water
- Can warp or swell if exposed to moisture
- More expensive
Even though it’s more stable than solid hardwood, it’s still wood at the end of the day. If water damage is what caused the problem in the first place, I’d be nervous about repeating history.
To sum up: Great for living rooms and bedrooms. Risky for kitchens, bathrooms, or anywhere moisture is involved.
Laminate – Budget-Friendly but Not Waterproof
Laminate has come a long way in terms of appearance. It can mimic wood really well and is usually more affordable.
Pros:
- Cost-effective
- Scratch-resistant
- Easy to install
Cons:
- Core is typically HDF (high-density fiberboard)
- Swells badly when water gets underneath
- Not truly waterproof
If water sits on laminate too long — especially at the joints — it can bubble and warp. Sound familiar? Yep.
Some newer laminates claim to be “water-resistant,” but that’s not the same as waterproof.
To sum up: Better than old-school laminate, but still not ideal if water damage is a concern.
SPC LVT – The Waterproof Option (BEST REPLACEMENT FOR PREVIOUS WATER DAMAGE)
SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) LVT is completely waterproof.
Pros:
- 100% waterproof
- Very durable
- Scratch and dent resistant
- Great for kitchens and bathrooms
- Lower maintenance
Cons:
- Doesn’t feel exactly like real wood
- Can feel harder underfoot
- Quality varies by brand
To sum up: If water damage is your main concern, SPC is probably the safest bet. It doesn’t swell, warp, or absorb moisture the way wood-based products do.
Your best option if you wan't to avoid water damage.
If water damage is what ruined your current floor, we would recommend that you seriously lean toward SPC LVT.
Engineered wood wins on beauty.
Laminate wins on price.
But SPC wins on practicality and peace of mind.
Peace of mind is worth a lot when you’ve already dealt with one flooring disaster.
Final Thoughts
Before choosing anything, it’s also worth asking:
- What caused the water damage?
- Has the source been fully fixed?
- Is moisture still present in the subfloor?
Because even the best flooring won’t survive if there’s an ongoing issue underneath (Check out our subfloor blog for more info)
